Mary Bowser - The Unsung Spy
Imagine this, your breathing down the enemy's neck, you have to try and act as if everything's normal and not make any mistakes. Taking the enemy’s intel inside their very own headquarters. This is what Mary Bowser had done. Mary Bowser was a spy for the union in the civil war, carrying out intelligence tasks to help the union.
Now, you might be asking “Who is Mary Bowser?” well lucky for you, I talk about them here.
Mary Bowser was a spy for the union. She was tasked with spying on the enemy and taking important documents and listening in on important conversations about the confederacy and their plans. After getting the intel, she would bring it back to the union or, tell the union about what's happening and it would be passed onto higher-ups. Before being a spy, she was a slave. Though, not much else is known about Mary Bowser because all known records were destroyed.
Mary Bowser was a spy, so this comes with a LOT of challenges. Some, not even involving spy work.
One challenge Mary faced was not getting caught. As a spy, you have to act natural, and never get caught in the act. It's very hard work as a spy, at any time you could be found out by the littlest of mistakes.
Another challenge is when she was free’d as a slave. She had a year to leave the state or, get re-enslaved. So, Mary decided to move to Africa in the fear of being enslaved again. Though she decided not to stay long much and moved to Richmond illegally. Meaning keeping a low profile and not drawing attention, easy if you’re Mary Bowser.
As you can see, spy work and being Mary Bowser must be very hard. She played an important role in the civil war, but not much is known about Mary. From a working slave to a spy. This, was Mary Bowser.
